San Francisco Interior Designer Ian Stallings Says Green Design Selections Can Save Funds and the Surroundings

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) December 17, 2011

Building on his work with the Conrad Foundation and the Gay Straight Alliance Network (GSA Network) to make public schools better and safer, San Francisco interior designer Ian Stallings found new sources of inspiration at Global Green’s 7th Annual Gorgeous and Green Gala last week, and is sharing some of tips he learned at the event.

Like everyone else, I tend to get caught up in the minutiae of my daily life and sometimes forget the importance of our environment, said Stallings. I do the basic things, like composting, recycling and using public transportation as much as possiblebut there are so many things I can do within my business to help the planet. Attending the Global Green event inspired me to recommit to those values.

The event facilitated connections between Stallings and various builders and manufacturers who supply the materials that he and his contractors can use for projects. Stallings believes there are many ways to incorporate green products into his designs and still keep them glamorous, fun, comfortableor any other ambiance desired.

Some of the tips the San Francisco interior decorator and designer learned from Global Green that he is applying to new designs include:

Nularis Will Exhibit at Dwell on Design and style at Los Angeles Convention Middle, June 24-26

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) June 21, 2011

The Los Angeles-based lighting and green-tech energy company Nularis, an exhibitor at the 2011 Dwell on Design expo, brings lighting out from behind the shade with a wide-ranging assortment of LED bulbs that are design-forward enough to stand alone. Nularis extensive Designer Collection features more than 70 LED bulbs for architectural and interior design applicationsincluding several proprietary productsto create one of the broadest selections of its kind available: http://www.nularis.com

At Dwell on Design at the Los Angeles Convention Center, June 24-26the West Coasts largest modern design showNularis will showcase bulbs from its Designer Collection and popular selections from its other product lines. Nularis is the only exhibitor at Dwell on Design focusing exclusively on LED bulbs; throughout the weekend, they will conduct give-aways of mini-LED flashlights and sample bulbs.

Were excited to be showing at Dwell on Design, and to introduce LED bulbs that are brilliant in their own right, without requiring to be hidden or concealed, as lighting traditionally has been, said Era Tadevosian, Vice President of Business Development & Sales, Nularis. These bulbs are as aesthetically appealing as they are the embodiment of an energy-efficient, smart product. Architects and designers can realize plans and lighting schemes, for retrofits and new construction alike, and also elevate projects with eco-friendly green technology.

In addition to its focus on design-forward bulbs, Nularis stands apart from other LED suppliers through innovative client services it provides including energy audits from certified energy consultants, and advisement on tax-incentive and rebate programs that make LED retrofits and new installations affordable. Creative financing from governmental programs and utility companies adds to the value of LED implementation beyond the immediate savings on energy bills. There is a wide variety of funding opportunities available to qualified customers moving toward energy-efficiency with LED lighting, said Ms. Tadevosian. From zero-percent financing to tax incentives, we help our clients identify the best means to achieve their goals.

LED bulbs from Nularis come with a 10-year, No-Questions-Asked replacement guarantee, and the bulbs will likely last more than 20 years. LED bulbs use an average of 80% less energy than incandescent bulbs (which will be phased out by Federal law in the U.S. by 2014). Moreover, unlike halogen and incandescent bulbs, LED bulbs remain cool to the touch, while still emitting the warm, rich color temperatures of traditional bulb types. And, unlike compact fluorescent lamps (CFL), LED technology is free of toxic mercury, making it the safest, most environmentally sound choice. Currently, it is illegal in 10 states to discard CFL bulbs in regular trash bins due to chemical hazards; more states will follow suit, and strict federal regulations govern cleanup of breakage. LED technology has no such downside.

Some of the most popular LED models from Nularis are the Times Square and Heavy Metal pear bulbs, which feature a distinctive array of bright mini-LEDs, and the rich, warm Harmony loop. The elegant Art Gallery bulb spotlights fine works of art with equally admirable illumination, while the versatile Midnight MR16 and 12 Watt PAR38 bulbs are ideal for track and recessed lighting, respectively. The LED Tear Drop Candelabra bulb combines a traditional flame tip with a sleek, metallic look.

Energy-saving, non-toxic, cost-cutting, and now design forward, LED lighting is the future. Experience it now with LED lighting from Nularisbeautiful bulbs that watch their waste, with no additional wardrobe necessary. For more information: http://www.nularis.com

Shining the light on energy saving light bulbs – the top 10 questions

Following on from Energy Saving Week, which took place from 19 – 25 October, we thought that it was about time someone tackled those myths about lighting – so here are our top 10 questions about energy saving light bulbs and those dirty incandescent ones.

1. Aren’t energy saving bulbs much dimmer than traditional ones?
Whilst Energy Saving light bulbs once had a reputation for being dim this is now outdated. Most modern varieties – produced by household brands – are just as bright as traditional bulbs and give an equally ‘warm’ light.

2. Aren’t energy saving light bulbs full of mercury and other toxins?
A standard energy saving light bulb contains 3 to 4 milligrams of mercury- whilst a standard thermometer contains at least 100 times more mercury! Indeed, the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs states that the amount of mercury in lamps is less than the mercury that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere by coal-fire power generation to produce the energy used by an incandescent lamp.

3. Why has my local supermarket stopped selling traditional light bulbs?
From 1st September 2009, retailers in the UK were no longer allowed to buy traditional 100MW tungsten bulbs from their suppliers- they can however, still sell them until their supplies run out. Other wattage of bulbs will be phased out in a similar manner by 2012. Whilst many retailers chose to stockpile their traditional light bulbs, it is possible that some of the smaller retailers near you will run out of stocks quicker as they’ll have more limited storage in their shop.

4. How much would I save by using energy saving light bulbs? Aren’t they more expensive to begin with?
Again, they used to be, but nowadays you’ll find them competitively priced with the traditional bulbs. In fact, the Energy Saving Trust estimates that not only will they last longer, but you save around £2.50 a year per bulb in energy bills – so you’ll save around a total of £65 in energy and replacement costs over the lifetime of each bulb.

5. Is this banning the sale of traditional bulbs (yet another) thing that the EU is forcing on us?
Whilst there is an EU-wide directive covering the sale of traditional bulbs, the UK also has its own voluntary agreement with major retailers which actually goes further – stopping the sale of traditional bulbs a year earlier than the rest of the EU. The UK has also, uniquely in Europe, committed itself to cuts in carbon emissions outside any international treaty. Restricting the sales of traditional bulbs is regarded as being the “low hanging fruit” of the fight against climate change as it’s an easy, cost-positive way of cutting carbon quickly.

6. Don’t energy saving light bulbs need time to warm up?
Again, this is something that energy savings bulbs have got a bad reputation for but now, it’s undeserved. A modern energy saving bulb will only take one or two seconds to reach full brilliance, which is barely noticeable in your day-to-day life.

7. Can you recycle energy saving bulbs?
Yes you can! Under the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) regulations, anywhere that sells energy saving light bulbs has to provide information on where they can be recycled. Many of the larger retailers will even take them away for you.

8. Aren’t energy saving light bulbs a danger to your health? I’ve heard they can cause migraines?
Some people have concerns that energy saving bulbs pose a risk to human health. Some of the most common concerns are:
Migraines: Many migraine support groups have raised this issue as a concern, the Department of Health is funding research into the matter.
Epilepsy: Many people fear than energy saving bulbs can cause epilepsy. However, Epilepsy Action says: “Epilepsy Action is not aware of any evidence that low energy light bulbs can directly trigger epileptic seizures in people with photosensitive epilepsy”
Skin concerns: The Health Protection Agency state that open (single envelope) CFLs should not be used where people are closer than 30 cm to 1 ft to the bare light bulb for over 1 hour a day. At these distances CFLs might emit Ultra Violet (UV) light at a level less than equivalent to being outside on a sunny summer’s day. As of September 2009 as a result of EU legislation, all energy saving light bulbs emit a safe amount of UV light so pose no cancer risk.

9. I have lots of dimmer switches in my home – can I use energy saving light bulbs? What about Bayonet and Cap fittings –I’m not sure I like those weird-looking ones?
Traditionally, energy saving light bulbs have not been available for dimmer switch lights and were exclusively available in the “weird” design. However, as a result of recent innovations, energy saving dimmer switch lights are starting to become more widely available. Why not search for them online?
Likewise, energy saving bulbs are now available in both Cap and bayonet fittings in a range of designs –including “lookalikes” which are exactly like traditional designs. The Energy Saving trust has a comprehensive guide to the different energy saving light bulbs on their website.

10. Is it more energy-efficient to keep energy saving lights on all the time, or should I turn them on and off as needed?
Turning a light on uses about the same amount of energy as keeping one on for two minutes –so it’ll be more efficient to turn them off as you leave the room if you know you’re not coming back for a short while.

So that’s it! The phasing out of incandescent light bulbs is a really positive step for you and the environment. With the economy going through such a tough time, who wants to spend their hard-earned cash on something as boring as keeping the lights on! Now you know all the facts, get some energy saving light bulbs for your home and treat yourself with the money you’ve saved.

Lighting Up Your Decorating Project With Moroccan Home Lighting

By Moe Tamani

Lighting is one of the hardest choices in any decorating project. Wall Sconces, chandeliers, floor lamps, candle lamps or electric light fixtures? After you have decided for a nice chandelier, some sconces and few accent lights, now comes the question what kind? You are looking for uniqueness, a beautiful design, size, hopefully with a nice story behind your pick. That is exactly what more and more find in Moroccan themed interior design, the fastest growing interior design concept in the US.

Moroccan lighting is one of the most unique concepts for many reasons. Moroccan Decor is generally very hard to find in the US and also very unique because of the different historic, cultural and art influences in Morocco. Moroccan lighting with its vivid colors, elaborated geometric forms, exotic designs, and unique raw materials is the most recognized symbol of Moroccan decor.

Henna lamps, made with stretched goat skin and hand decorated with traditional henna designs, and at times dyed with saffron or paprika based dyes, are one great way to add an earthy and rustic touch to any space. Henna wall sconces can also be used without lighting just as decorative wall pieces. Often said that Morocco is the country of recycling where nothing goes to waist, the goat skin is recycled into these beautiful lampshades and passed on to henna artists to put in the final decorative touches. Most if not all the henna artist are women that earn extra cash and for who it is the only way to achieve financial independence.

A Stained glass lamp with carved motives can be a bolder more extravagant way to spice up your space. With Moroccan lamps, also referred as Moroccan lanterns (useful search words if you are researching them on the net) you can introduce a little eclectic flair in virtually any existing concept you may already have.

If you already have wrought iron or rustic furniture, then get one of those cool hand hammered chandeliers. A Chandelier is the perfect option that would delightfully enhance that sense of magic and warmth that only Moroccan chandeliers can accomplish.

Using few pieces of Moroccan lighting and some accent pieces will recreate a true exotic Moroccan oasis.

Tips on using Moroccan lighting:

Consider “playing” with different wattage that can help you realize a different look, experiment with using a candle instead of a light bulb, when possible a candle works best in small spaces. When using henna lamps or wall sconces, use very low wattage 20-25 watts is recommended. Colored light bulbs are a great way to add a color emphasis to your project.

Maintain your Moroccan lighting:

Maintenance of your Moroccan lighting is minimal and doing so will ensure that your items last for a long time. Most of the light fixtures that have opening side doors only require the hinge to be lubricated once a while. Henna lamps and wall sconces need absolutely no maintenance, however expect the henna to fall off as it is designed to do so. The actual henna on the skin of the sconces will fall off and leave the reddish design tattooed on the surface, so it is useless to fight it and you will be surprise to see that it your piece will embellish even more. When using Moroccan lanterns outside consider spraying them with a clear sealant to keep the lamps from rusting. There are two ways of coating your lamps. You can meticulously go over the metal parts only or you can just spray the sealer throughout the fixture including the glass. If you choose to go over the whole lamp you will finish it in a way that the lamp will appear aged. Beware that at all times you need to keep the hinges protected so you are still able to open and close the door.

Light bulb or candle?

Esthetically speaking using a candle will always bring the most out of your lighting fixture, working best in small space where less light is needed or dim lighting is desired. Using a light bulb will bring more light in larger spaces. If your lantern has a flat base, you can just sit a candle using the same fire safety precautions you would otherwise. If you decide to go with an electrical bulb remember that most if not all Moroccan lighting importers do not include the wiring kit which you can acquire easily at your local hardware store for a minimal cost. Once you have the wiring kit all you have to do is insert the kit through the opening door and get the plug out of the top opening of the lamp and voila you are ready to showcase the new lamp.

Marketing Surveys – Cost Savings Ideas

By Marc Tillman

In this economic environment, many companies are looking for ways to save on the cost of conducting marketing surveys. Difficult choices often need to be made. This research is critical to business operations, but the budget just isn’t there for a full-scale project covering all of the nuances that need to be addressed. And budgetary restraints are often a circular issue where the results from a marketing survey might directly influence the company’s bottom line and provide an avenue for improved cash flow.

One option is to delay the marketing survey until additional dollars become available. But, if a company is flexible and can accept a scaled back approach, the project might still move forward at a reduced cost. This can be a challenging decision for a client since market research firms typically administer marketing surveys with the goal of achieving as close to a “perfect” solution as possible. Therefore, when discussions turn from how best to conduct a marketing survey to what services or deliverable can be eliminated to reduce the project fees, both the client and market research firm must “get over” the fact that the best solution is not possible within the project budget.

Our belief is that clients should not scrimp on survey design or engage in self-service design unless the person drafting the questionnaire is qualified and experienced in marketing surveys and questionnaire writing. However, many clients seem to believe that this is the first option to save on costs. Unfortunately, in-house familiarity with a company’s product or service, or a professional degree in engineering or finance, does not qualify someone to write marketing surveys. Survey design fees should generally be a low cost item for market research firms. If you don’t have the budget for a high quality survey instrument, consider not doing the project.

Before turning to the costs of data collection and what options might be available, it is often helpful for a client to focus next on reporting needs. When reporting costs are combined with survey design fees, and subtracted from the overall project budget, the end result is the amount available for data collection.

Reporting is one of those areas where a client needs to carefully consider the scope of the project and must often make difficult choices. Where marketing surveys are limited in length and/or encompass a smaller number of survey respondents, they can often be tabulated and reported in top-line format as the sole deliverable (plus the underlying data file). This allows a client to view bar charts of frequencies of responses for each question along with relevant statistics such as means, medians, and standard deviations. Most top-line reports are generated by market research firms using automated software and are a low cost item.

On the other hand, if one of the goals of the marketing survey is to compare responses of different sub-groups (such as age brackets, income levels, regions of the country, etc.), this can be a more expensive deliverable, often referred to as “banner tabulations” or “banners”. Banners allow a client to view side-by-side columns of sub-groups with notations of whether differences between banner points are statistically significant i.e., are meaningful. Fees charged by market research firms for banner tabulations are often slightly more expensive than the cost of designing marketing surveys, and can be similar in cost to the combined price of survey design and top-line reporting.

A key consideration is whether a client is comfortable working with banners or has a statistical background. For first time users, banners can be confusing and therefore a wasted expense if the client cannot fully understand the results. In these cases, an executive summary report of key statistical findings can produce a higher return on investment and can be similar to the cost of banners if there is a limited length or number of respondents. Full statistical reports are the best option if the budget allows for it.

This concludes Part 1 of our discussion on cost saving ideas for marketing surveys. The next article will address the subject of data collection and the different options that market research firms can provide. Keep in mind that the cost of survey design and reporting should be identified first, with additional price adjustments coming in other areas.

Architectural Area Lighting

By R. Neal

Architectural area lights feature an aesthetic component that differentiates them from the purely functional fixtures used in typical site lighting. Although the lamps used in both architectural area lighting and site lighting are often similar–if not identical– light sources, architectural area lights are made with a noticeably higher level of decorative design and ornamentation. As such, purchasing costs can be rather high, and this can deter municipalities, academic institutions, and even small corporations from making an investment that would otherwise serve their outdoor lighting needs on a number of levels ranging from public appeal to commercial branding. When commercial site developers, architects, and contractors encounter this type of resistance, they can turn to RLLD Commercial Lighting for adjunct lighting design support that will enable them to propose cost-effective, energy saving light sourcing that offers both tangible benefits and ROI on multiple levels.

Contractors frequently encounter office buildings, churches, museums, civic centers, municipal headquarters, universities, restaurants, resorts, and country clubs that require a highly customized, often very sophisticated architectural area lighting system that will contribute certain key elements to their property, building architecture, and public image. The fixtures and lamps that will ultimately be used to build these systems must completely accommodate the multiple demands of dark sky laws, increasingly strict LPW efficiency codes, minimum foot candle requirements, and bring the client measurable ROI through reduced power requirements and minimized ongoing maintenance.

If you are a commercial developer or sole proprietor working as a DIY electrical contractor, you can quickly and accurately accommodate these many demands in an expeditious manner is to work with a vendor like RLLD Commercial Lighting that offers complimentary, adjunct design services with a systematic approach. Before we suggest any specific lamps or fixtures, we first want to learn more specifics from you regarding your client’s site. When we understand architectural area lighting to actually be a combination of four separate elements– parking lot lighting, parking garage lighting, building architectural lighting, and security lighting– the right questions to ask become readily apparent. Does your client have a parking lot, a parking garage, or both? What is the total number of buildings located on the property? Are there public park areas, open landscapes, recreational areas, or walkways that require special lighting? How many people work or visit the facility at night? What is the total acreage of the property if it is located on a considerably large piece of land? How much light will the entire system output, what it will cost, and what will be the expected return on investment for your client?

The data gathered from this dialogue is now inputted into sophisticated lighting design software that enables us to calculate on a point by point level the exact photometric requirements needed to determine which specific fixtures will best provide building accent light, perimeter and walkway security, glare free, well-lit parking areas, and aesthetic, shadow-free landscape, and an energy savings package that offers a measurable ROI by means of energy and maintenance cost savings. By eliminating the guesswork from architectural area lighting, RLLD Commercial Lighting helps contractors first determine exactly what lighting levels and power requirements are optimal to propose, and second, which actual products will most effectively and affordably offer clients lasting solutions that are affordable, reliable, and aesthetically superior. By giving smaller design firms and individual lighting design consultants access to software normally affordable only to larger firms, RLLD Commercial Lighting also helps level the lighting design playing field, arming small companies and consultants with competitive advantages that can rival even the largest firms in photometric accuracy, specification grade quality, and multiple benefits at the line item level.

RLLD Commercial Lighting maintains a full selection of architectural area lighting fixtures, lamping options, commercial lighting poles, and mounting accessories that allow the contractor to offer more options to the client at the line item level. As a representative of a number of reputable, domestic, and established manufacturers, we can offer any commercial developer, architect, or lighting designer impeccable lead time on products made here in the United States and drop shipped anywhere in the country to expedite time to market delivery of products and services.

Exterior Architectural Lighting Products,Supplies & Photometric Lighting Design Services

By R. Neal

Exterior architectural lighting must compliment natural and architectural aesthetics with luminaires whose fixture designs reflect the geometric themes and subtle nuances of surrounding structures and landscapes. These luminaires must also operate with optimal efficiency and provide the same level of quality that purely functional site lighting fixtures and general lamping options deliver. It is important for your clients to realize from the inception of the consultation process that exterior architectural lights must anticipate stringent lighting control laws now taking effect across the nation. New LPW requirements, light pollution restrictions, and limitations on the actual lamps that can be used are becoming increasingly. What you propose to your client today must be able to withstand not only the forces of nature and time, but also the forces of change and legislation within human infrastructure and society. Creating an exterior architectural lighting system that is customized to the exact parameters of your client’s site with minimal maintenance, upgrades, and replacements is something we specialize in helping you do.

Exterior architectural lighting must compliment natural and architectural aesthetics with luminaires whose fixture designs reflect the geometric themes and subtle nuances of surrounding structures and landscapes.

With proprietary, commercial lighting design software, we will input the data that you gather from any municipal, commercial, academic, government, or sports facility site and scientifically calculate the precise photometric requirements for optimal foot candle density and directional lighting control. These calculations are crucial to helping you develop a competitive and cost effective proposal your client will feel confident will meet their long term needs without future complications, expenditures, or mishaps. In essence, this equates to something of a “less is more” approach to fixture placement, as increased efficiency and efficacy in HID and LED outdoor lights now make it possible to get more lumens per watt from the average lamp, enabling us to illuminate larger areas than ever before with fewer physical fixtures and less obtrusive equipment.

This represents a huge competitive advantage to freelance electrical contractors and smaller design firms who normally lack the funding to invest in high-end development software packages and lack the manpower to engage in long-term collaborative design sessions with clients who know intuitively what they want, but lack the technical knowledge to spec out the details in a timely manner. RLLD Commercial Lighting experts will handle this phase of your proposal development for you by taking raw data you collect in reference to the size, nature, location, and usage of your client’s site and generating a point-by-point schematic of the entire exterior architectural lighting system.

As a general rule, we subdivide exterior architectural lighting systems into component elements that represent the specific operations and aesthetics of a site. This is necessary because different elements of site lighting often fall into overlapping categories of regulation. Parking lot lighting is a good example of this. Parking lot lights must meet the minimum foot candle requirements of the local municipality in which they are installed. They must simultaneously control their light output in such a fashion as to fully comply with local dark sky laws, and they must meet with wind load requirements mandated by higher levels of government. Commercial garage lighting requires an equal level of attention be paid to both vertical and horizontal foot candle density, and calculating this delicate balance requires either access to specialty software or a degree in high-level calculus. Building lights and landscape lights must keynote geometric forms and thematic patterns to be truly effective, and these as well must be both energy efficient and optimized for glare reduction and light pollution control to remain compliant with government mandates.

The key to developing a successful, overall architectural exterior lighting system here is to use only enough visible equipment to compliment the scenery without dominating its elements. Decorative fixtures should be visible, yet “low profile” in their positioning, and they must always bring more attention to the objects they light than they do their own appearance. By paying attention to this simple, but much understated fact in the world of lighting design, you will give yourself an enormous competitive advantage over rival bids that over emphasize equipment and miss the essence of precision design and true site enhancement.

Working with a design services hardware vendor like RLLD will give your business, no matter how large or small, access to resources few of your competitors can obtain, and save both you and your clients time, money, and hassle at the end of the day.

Home Decorating With Tiffany Table Lamps Lighting

By Ryan Allen

They first thing that comes to mind when you are thinking about Tiffany lighting is bright and colorful glass, craftsman designs, and floral and insect motifs. The first Tiffany lamps and lighting where first made by a craftsman named Louis Tiffany. Louis took advantage of the times that involved when electricity was evolving in its infantry and took the knowledge from his father that was a great jewelry artisan and started creating the first beautiful Tiffany table lamps. It is quite remarkable how similar that Tiffany lighting and lamps are very similar to jewelry with their intricate and beautiful designs.

He created the stained glass in a whole spectrum of beautiful and vibrant colors. This type of glass was great for creating subtle light and adding beauty. With this new innovative design Louis began creating the first designs of Tiffany lighting. They typically incorporated a lot of craftsman style qualities such as wrought iron and metal and combined them with the beautiful pieces of glass.

He also experimented with other forms of glass and created some techniques using blown glass. He utilized a team of skilled craftsmen and glassblowers to help him make unique lamps that were treasured by people. These lamps were very expensive and a luxury item and only the wealthy and rich people could afford them in America.

Tiffany came up with a technique that was later used in all his pieces called Favrile. He later patented this technique so no one could try to recreate his designs.

Louis came up with methods that reheated glass and sprayed vaporized solution of salts of tin or iron. These solutions were absorbed into the molten glass and created layers of beautiful colors when the glass was cooled down.
