San Francisco Interior Designer Ian Stallings Says Green Design Choices Can Save Money and the Environment

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) December 17, 2011

Building on his work with the Conrad Foundation and the Gay Straight Alliance Network (GSA Network) to make public schools better and safer, San Francisco interior designer Ian Stallings found new sources of inspiration at Global Green’s 7th Annual Gorgeous and Green Gala last week, and is sharing some of tips he learned at the event.

Like everyone else, I tend to get caught up in the minutiae of my daily life and sometimes forget the importance of our environment, said Stallings. I do the basic things, like composting, recycling and using public transportation as much as possiblebut there are so many things I can do within my business to help the planet. Attending the Global Green event inspired me to recommit to those values.

The event facilitated connections between Stallings and various builders and manufacturers who supply the materials that he and his contractors can use for projects. Stallings believes there are many ways to incorporate green products into his designs and still keep them glamorous, fun, comfortableor any other ambiance desired.

Some of the tips the San Francisco interior decorator and designer learned from Global Green that he is applying to new designs include:

Green Power Energy Source – 2 Alternative Energy Sources

By Miller Britzke

In this article I want to talk about two alternative energy sources. One being solar or sunlight and the other being wind. Using a green power energy source can be beneficial in a couple of ways with one being the savings it can have on our planet. If we can do anything to help our planet especially for the future of our children. You can use it year round also. After all, this is our home. Another benefit, especially in this new area of going green and rising prices in just about anything we do or purchase is the amount of energy you can save. Not only will this have an instant savings but in the long run it really is going to have an impact on how much extra money you can save.It is nice to see that our governments are now starting to use this resource. We should have been using it or implementing it years ago. After all the technology was there.

The first method I want to talk about is using our sunlight to reflect into solar panels to generate electricity. This especially works well in the winter time as the snow helps reflect the light into the panels resulting in higher heat. This electricity is made into DC (direct current)and then transformed into AC or alternating current by means of converters. Using solar you can generate electricity to power anything from your boom box to running your whole house. You can eliminate your whole electric bill. These are very simple to build yourself. You can literally make or put the panels together yourself or buy them whole. Learn to build them yourself and you can save even more. You can pick up great guides on how to do this yourself. Check out at the bottom in my resource box.

The second method I would like to talk about is wind power. This method of green power works along the same lines of creating the electricity or DC current but with the difference of course with wind instead of sunlight being the energy source. The wind and air turn a set of blades which then turns a turbine creating the current. These two are simple to set up yourself. Again you can pick up a guide and have your own up in very little time and cost to you.

Those are two green power energy sources that you can use to both help the environment and have a huge impact on how much money you can save. Especially in the long run. As you can see using both solar and wind as alternative energy sources can have a huge impact. I hope this article sparks some interest in helping you create some home made energy. Who knows, you may make your electric meter spin backwards and your electric company will be paying you. This does really occur. Not to mention the fun it is. Investing in an Energy Monitor Can Save You up to Fifteen Percent on Your Energy Costs

By Brandy Blair

An energy monitor for the home provides accurate, immediate readouts of how much electricity is being consumed in the home. Some of the more advanced models not only measure the amount of power used, but they also translate this into a dollar and cents display that will show the homeowner how much money individual appliances are costing the home.

Additionally, certain models are now emerging on the market that also estimate the greenhouse gas emissions that various appliances are responsible for generating.

Even the most rudimentary power monitors have demonstrated an impressive ability to help reduce needless power consumption. Statistics have shown that they have helped homeowners reduce electrical spending by up to 15 percent.

More sophisticated types of monitors measure the power that is used by the entire home. Other, simpler, and more affordable monitors track the electrical usage of individual appliances.

Whole house energy monitors can be connected to a home power supply by one of four methods. They can clamp to the electric main. They can connect to the electrical meter through a sensor array or an optical port.

There are also models that directly communicate with a form of smart meter. Others tie directly in to the electrical service panel of the home.

From this position, a whole house power monitor gathers data and relays it to a remote display unit. The connection to the power grid and the remote display can be maintained by a wire, a cable, or operate wireless via radio waves.

In the newest models, too, there are now online, real time feeds capabilities that relay the information gathered to a personal computer, laptop, or smart phone. Communication between the connection array and the display is maintained by cable, wires, or radio waves.

A whole house energy monitor does more than simply look at how much power the entire house is consuming. It can be very specific and precise in its measurements, and it can be programmed to monitor any device in the house.

For example, a resident can track the energy used by a particular light in a room. When the light is turned off, the difference in power consumption can then be used to determine if the light is truly energy efficient and warrants a replacement.

Not everyone can afford to invest in a whole house energy monitor. For these individuals, it is better to start saving money somewhere than to do nothing at all.

There are very simple and affordable power monitors that can plug into individual wall outlets. Various appliances can then be plugged into these smart power strips, as many people call them.

The energy monitor then tracks the amount of power that the device consumes while it is operating. This information is fed to the display. Some models track the amount of electricity alone. Others calculate how much money the device is costing the resident.

One added benefit of the power monitors is the kill switches that are built into them. Many appliances never go off, but rather go into a standby mode that can still drain power from the wall. Shutting off the power at the monitor, however, puts an immediate halt to this wasted consumption.

Football Predictions – How to Bet and Win!

By Christian Grisham

There are a lot of people who rely on football predictions to be able to gain an edge in football gambling. But how exactly are these predictions formulated?

Before you do anything else (before you put any money at stake) make sure that you know what you’re doing and what you’re getting into. If you really want to get into football gambling, it would be best if you would read about the subject matter first before you start betting on any team.

The internet is teeming with information on the subject. You can search for articles and websites that would be able to help you learn more about the subject. This would also let you in on some tricks of the trade. The more knowledge that you have the more chances you get of making a good bet. Also, you will be steered away from false information or money scalpers online. And of course, that would be a good thing for you and your money.

For most people who are just starting out in the business, football predictions are real charms for them. These predictions would tell them about what exactly could happen in the next game. Based on these predictions, they can then place a wager on the team that they think would win. Of course, nobody can really predict the outcome of a game. Handicappers, or people who give game predictions, tell their clients that there are no guarantees that their predictions are really going to happen. So it will be up to you if you’re going to bet according to their predictions.

These handicappers are taking a great deal of effort and putting in a lot of time to study each and every player’s move. They also take a look at the teams’ performances. The handicapper bases his predictions about the outcome of the game on these factors. They would do a matchup of the team’s strengths and weaknesses and also take into consideration their performance in the previous games. It really is a tough job, and the handicappers are doing it for you.

The handicappers would also save you a lot of time and effort when it comes to studying the players in the team and the team itself. You probably don’t have the luxury of time to watch every single game closely and to memorize every play in the rule book right? So you could leave the job to the pros. Handicappers are the gurus of the business. The years that they have spent studying the game makes them confident about the predictions that they’re giving you.

Of course there would be a fee for these predictions. It would actually depend on the handicapper and how much and how you would pay them. Some handicappers ask for a fee outright. Other handicappers would ask for a cut from your winnings. It would all depend on you.

Of course it would still depend on you whether or not you are going to need these football predictions. It is not a requirement for placing bets, but is sure is going to help.

Kitchen Lighting Design – The 4 Types Of Lighting You Should Have

By Lee Dobbins

For many people the last thing they will think about when thinking of redecorating their kitchen is the type of kitchen lighting design that they want and normally this the first thing that they will cut from their budget. But if you want your kitchen and function well then good lighting is a must. A good kitchen lighting design plan will blend into the architectural and decorative details of the room.

When it comes to uses lights in a kitchen the most common mistake made by many people is that they try to light the entire room by just using a ceiling mounted fixture. But unfortunately this will results in the room being visually overpowered by the light fixture and even recessed lighting isn’t much better.

Therefore plan for the layered look and kitchen that is well lit will layer and blend 4 different kinds of lights and any kitchen redesign or remodel or new build should include the following:-

1. Task Lighting. This is the workhouse element of kitchen lighting and will provide adequate light for when you are chopping vegetables or reading recipes. The optimum place for such lighting is between a person’s head and the actual work surface (and that is why lighting located below cabinets on the walls are very effective).

2. Ambient Lighting. This will create a warm glow to your kitchen and will fill the room as well as soften shadows and makes those entering the kitchen feeling instantly welcome. If you have cabinets which do not reach up to the ceiling then ambient lighting can be placed there. Of the four kinds of lighting you can include in your kitchen ambient is the most overlooked.

3. Accent Lighting. This will give depth and dimension to any kitchen and accent lighting is those fixtures which are placed inside a glassed front cabinet in order to illuminate the china, glassware or collectibles that are contained within it. Also recessed and adjustable low voltage fixtures used as spotlight art can be used as accent lighting.

4. Decorative Lighting. This type of lighting will add a sparkle to any space.

However when planning a kitchen lighting design is best if you plan ahead and you don’t have the money in your budget then install a series of pendants in the room but whilst the remodeling work is being carried out also have three junction boxes installed. Thus when you have the money available to purchase fixtures at a later date they can be easily added to your kitchen.

Energy Saving Tips: Light up the World & Lighten Your Wallet at the Same Time

By Joel McDonald

The world seems to be all about efficiency and ways to protect the environment. You want to conserve energy, but sometimes it is hard to know if products are more hype than anything or if they are really worth the investment. You hear about energy efficient lights all the time, you see them in the store right next to the cheap light bulbs that you always buy. The light bulbs that claim to be energy efficient are more expensive so you pass them by but this is actually costing you money!!

Compact Fluorescent Lamp (CFL) bulbs do help the environment, conserve energy and save money in the long run. These energy efficient bulbs use an incredible sixty five to eighty percent LESS energy than the incandescent bulbs you usually buy. This means that switching to CFL bulbs instead of the less efficient bulbs that many of us use, you can actually save up to 7% off your energy bill each month. These bulbs also last much longer than a regular bulb and so while you pay more for one initially you save money because they can last longer than regular bulbs which you would have to replace two or three times (or more).

Compact Fluorescent Lamp bulbs work differently than regular light bulbs. Regular bulbs use most of the electricity to heat up the filament inside of them which in turn lights up. Only about 2% of the electricity used by these light bulbs is actually used to produce light, the rest is used to create heat. A Compact Fluorescent bulb passes the electrical current through a mercury vapour which in turn creates an ultraviolet light. The light created is then absorbed by the phosphorescent coating that is on the light bulb which produces a glowing effect.

CFL bulbs turn over 20% of the energy they use into light so they require much less energy to produce the same brightness as a regular bulb. These bulbs can be used in your existing light fixtures and lamps so there is no extra cost to convert to them above the initial cost of the bulbs, which as stated above is made up for in energy savings and longer lasting bulbs.

Another choice for energy efficient lighting is to use LED ((Light Emitting Diode) bulbs. Light emitting diode bulbs are by far the most energy efficient bulbs available. These bulbs do not generate heat and do not have a filament. They very rarely need replacing and last longer than any other option. They are one of the safest choices as well because they do not generate heat there is not a concern of being burned or a fire occurring because of the bulb. Light Emitting Diode bulbs do require the initial investment and you may need to change the fixtures.

The return on your investment by the immense saving on energy bills and almost never needing to replace the bulbs is above and beyond any amount that you spend at first. You also have the knowledge that you are saving tonnes of greenhouse gases from harming the environment. LED lighting is becoming more affordable every day with the growing demand for energy efficient lighting and is most definitely the way of lighting the future for years to come.Energy efficient lighting is not only smart but is one way to cut down on your carbon footprint, save the environment and keep money in your pocket rather than the electric company’s.

Energy Saving Light Bulbs – The Sensible Alternative

By Hans Dekker

The lights in an average household use about 20% of the total electricity, so anything that will reduce that power consumption will help lower your energy bill while cutting down on pollution. Fortunately, it’s easy to save energy on lighting by simply installing energy saving light bulbs.

Regular incandescent light bulbs produce light by heating a small filament inside the bulb. This heat production accounts for 90% of the energy they consumer. Energy saving light bulbs are florescent, much more efficient because they don’t need heat to produce light.

How much energy do they save? On average, the energy savings are about 66%. But that is not the only way you save money using these bulbs. They also last much longer than regular bulbs, so although they cost more, you still save money when buying light bulbs.

Energy saving light bulbs last about 10 times longer than incandescent bulbs. Even if the florescent bulb costs considerable more than the traditional bulb, the lifespan of the bulb combined with the energy savings adds up to substantial savings.

It has been conservatively estimated that you can save about $4 per year for each energy saving light bulb that you install in your house. If you replace 20 bulbs, that’s a savings of $80 a year.

Just imagine if every household in America took advantage of the savings that compact florescent bulbs provide. Not only would have more buying power, we would also cut down on the pollution caused by electricity generating plants.

Greenhouse emissions are one of the biggest concerns with burning fossil fuels to produce electricity. The average household produces more greenhouse gases than a car because of the amount of electricity consumed. Installing energy saving light bulbs is one way to cut down on those emissions.

Do your pocket book and the environment a favour by using florescent compact bulbs wherever you can. It’s the only sensible thing to do.
