Canadian Government Invests in Leapfrog Lighting for Increased-Quality, Far more Energy-Successful LED Mild Bulbs

Ottawa, Canada (PRWEB) March 28, 2013

At a news event today, the Honourable Gary Goodyear, Minister of State (Science and Technology) announced that Leapfrog Lighting will receive up to $ 150,000 through the National Research Council of Canadas Industrial Research Assistance Program.

Our government is strongly committed to initiatives that support science, technology and the growth of innovative Canadian firms,” said Minister Goodyear. “Like so many small and medium-sized businesses in Ontario, Leapfrog Lighting is doing some really innovative work. These businesses are critical to the Canadian economy and our government will continue to put in place the tools that Canadians need to grow, create jobs and secure their long-term prosperity.

Leapfrog Lighting’s goal is to improve LED lighting technologies with a special focus on quality of light. Leapfrog Lightings CEO, Stephen Naor, explained that the two obstacles to mainstream adoption of LED lighting are quality of light and economic value proposition. The new LED technology, based on advanced optical and thermal designs, is engineered to remove both barriers to adoption of energy-efficient LED light bulbs.

Leapfrog Lighting develops and markets advanced LED light bulbs with an optical and thermal design that provides measurable improvements in the lighting quality required by facility managers, architects and retailers, explained a Canadian Federal Government news release. Leapfrogs light bulbs exhibit improved glare control, light distribution and colour consistency over existing LED technologies.

The worldwide market for LED bulbs is projected to grow to $ 107 billion US annually within three years as new technologies improve light quality and price point. Leapfrogs made-in-Canada solution will save up to ten times the power usage of traditional incandescent bulbs, and will sell for less than current LED bulbs.

At Leapfrog, we see a future where every home and business adopts LED lighting, said Mr. Naor. In this future, we see a made-in-Canada solution that removes the barriers to LED lighting adoption by the mainstream.

Leapfrog Lighting already markets specification-grade LED bulbs with superior, consistent light qualities, popular with facility managers, retailers, architects, interior designers and galleries. These new bulbs will be more efficient and less expensive and will have better light, explained the Canadian Government news release.

The Minister stressed the importance of innovators such as Leapfrog Lighting, explaining that Canadas economic success does not depend on what governments dobut on what companies like Leapfrog do. He emphasized that Leapfrog, and other small businesses are the job creators and innovators.

Leapfrog Lightings new LED bulbs will be specified, designed and manufactured in Canada, partially funded by the involvement of IRAP, through the Ministry of Industry, and also through the Government of Ontarios Innovation Demonstration Fund, said Mr. Naor.

The investment is part of an initiative from the National Research Councils Industrial Research Assistance Program (IRAP) to help small- to mid-sized enterprises commercialize quickly. IRAP assists Canadian corporations with R&D and commercialization support for new products and processes designed to access new markets.

The Canada Economic Action Plan 2013 makes $ 20 million available over three years for a pilot program delivered through IRAP, focused on assisting small to mid-sized companies commercialize more quickly. Separately, the Canadian Economic Action Plan 2012 makes $ 500 million available in venture capital, with $ 110 million allocated to NRC each year to expand IRAPs reach and services

Lumens.com Introduces Unique CSYS LED Job Lamp by Jake Dyson, Created to Last More than 37 A long time

Sacramento, CA (PRWEB) May 31, 2012

Lumens.com has introduced the new CSYS LED Task Lamp by Jake Dyson, a revolutionary design built to last more than 37 years.

Available exclusively at Lumens.com, the CSYS LED Task Lamp is the latest contemporary lighting introduction from Jake Dyson, the result of six years of researching the mechanics and technology needed to innovate task lighting. The sleekly designed CSYS has a number of features that go beyond the conventions of the everyday desk lamp:

Built-in cooling mechanism: The advanced technology behind the CSYS is instrumental in keeping the lamp running for more than 37 years. Inside, the lamp features heat pipe technology, which conducts heat away from the LED lights and distributes it evenly over the length of the heat sink. Without requiring external pumps or extra energy to cool the LEDs, the CSYS is able to run brightly and efficiently for an extraordinary long timemore than 160,000 hours.

Dimmable LED lamping: Despite ever-accelerating technology that makes it challenging to keep up, the CSYS Task Lamp was designed around the latest generation of high-power, warm white LED lights and is fully dimmable. The spread and intensity of light can be controlled within the working area based on the lamps positioning. The technology also prevents early life failure of the LEDs and ensures a stable performance.

Innovative positioning: Inspired by a construction crane and drawing board, the CSYS can be adjusted effortlessly in three axes, similar to how a cable car moves along a cable. The mechanics are designed with precision to ensure smooth, exact positioning that doesnt sag or droop after it is let go.

The name CSYS refers to the system of coordinates that defines an objects position in the X, Y and Z axis. The lamp was also featured at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair during New York Design Week this month to much acclaim for its superior functionality and sustainability.

The son of high-profile inventor James Dyson (already a household name in vacuums and fans), Jake Dyson studied Industrial Design at Central St Martins College of Art and Design and began his career designing retail interiors in shops, cafes and clubs. He later bought a mill and lathe to start experimenting and developing products, with a hands-on approach all the way through conception to a products manufacture. His studio and workshop are based in Clerkenwell in London.

Lumens.com is the first to offer the CSYS Task Lamp, in stock and ready to ship. In addition to the new and exclusive lighting by Jake Dyson, Lumens.com also offers:

Lofings Lighting Can Guide Buyers via New Lighting Rules and Better, Far more Effective and Reasonably priced Lights Possibilities

Sacramento, CA (PRWEB) December 27, 2011

Californians have no need to overreact if they are fans of the original incandescent light bulbs for their nightly reading. According to the lighting experts at Lofings Lighting, a retail lighting institution in Sacramento for 50 years, there are many different options for alternatives to the 100-watt and 75-watt incandescent bulb. Not only are different lighting options that give off more light with less wattage, but there still is an inexpensive 95 watt incandescent version.

California has always been a pioneer in energy efficiency. California is actually one year ahead of the Federal regulations for lighting regulations geared toward reducing energy consumption, and greenhouse gas emissions. The 100-watt bulbs will no longer be able to be manufactured for the U.S. beginning in January 2012, but they stopped being shipped to California in January 2011. 2012 brings new regulations on the 75-watt bulb as well which will no longer be shipped to California as of January 2012. The Federal regulations on manufacturing of the 75 watt bulb wont kick in until January 2013.

We are creatures of habit and Americans have become unnecessarily alarmed about the new lighting regulations, concerned because of the bad fluorescent options that have been marketed to consumers in the past. There are many higher quality options that are reasonably priced to replace the traditional incandescent bulb. The new regulations require increased efficiency of these bulbs. The lighting industry is reinventing the incandescent bulb to meet these requirements. There are halogen bulbs which look like the standard pear shaped A-19 bulb, and produce the same quality of light. A 72 watt halogen bulb will produce 1490 lumens, the same amount and quality of light as the standard 100 watt incandescent with a 28% energy savings. A new 95 watt incandescent bulb from GE can produce 1635 lumens versus 1490 lumens from a traditional incandescent bulb.

General Service bulbs are affected by these increased efficiencies regulations that are being mandated. For the average consumer, they are the 100 watt, 75 watt, 60 watt, and 40 watt medium base A-19 (pear shaped) bulbs. Specialty type bulbs like 3-way, decorative flame tipped bulbs and many more are exempt from these requirements.

Compact Fluorescents (CFLs) are still an alternative to incandescent. The quality of CFLs has greatly improved in recent years. If you are concerned about finding an alternative similar to a traditional incandescent, look for lower Kelvin temperatures in the 2,700 to 3,000 range for warmer light which is closer to old-fashioned incandescent bulbs, explains Wendy Lofing-Rossotti of Lofings Lighting.

The most energy-efficient, high quality bulbs available currently are the new generation of LEDs, explains Wendy Lofing-Rossotti of Lofings Lighting. Manufacturers are taking the LED trend seriously and have started to design fixtures around the use of LED technology and maximize its lighting ability.

The new generation of LEDs are the most energy efficient form of lighting currently available. LEDs have quick start up, good color quality, are dimmable, and produce significantly less heat. These are some of the reasons why customer satisfaction has been so high with LED lighting products. There is a big difference between consumers acceptance of LEDs versus CFLs in the past. These new alternatives which have not been available until recently soften the blow of consumer reaction to mandated energy conservation. The use of LEDs in lighting is a great advancement for the industry and these new LED replacement bulbs are just one facet of how LEDs will be used in the future.

The goal at Lofings Lighting is to take care of the customer by providing quality lighting products and superior service. The family and their employees pride themselves on product knowledge and customer service which is the key to their 50 years of success.

BulbAmerica Expands its Line of Halogen Mild Bulbs to Give Customers A lot more Alternatives for High Doing Energy Productive Lighting

Brooklyn, NY (PRWEB) December 14, 2010

Are environmentally friendly light bulbs doing consumers more harm than good? In the April/May 2010 issue of Architectural Lighting, Elizabeth Donoff, ALs editor, expressed uneasiness concerning the transition to eco-friendly lighting, stating, What is of greatest concern to me is that this switch in lighting sources can be simplified to an either-or proposition. Donoff observed that the attention and praise that CFL and LED bulbs have earned from the media and the public has forced a steady stream of technologically immature products onto the market while keeping higher performing lighting options from consumers views. One of the most consistently high performing and environmentally friendly light sources are halogen light bulbs, a technology often overlooked amidst demands for new eco-friendly lighting. As Donoff noted, and BulbAmericas lighting experts agree, the adoption of halogen bulbs is a step consumers can take toward home energy efficiency.

Lasting anywhere from 2,000 hours to 12,000 hours, halogen light bulbs achieve life hour ratings significantly better than incandescent bulbs but when compared to CFLs and LEDs underperform. BulbAmericas Lighting experts and industry leaders have found that this underperformance is often exaggerated because consumers have been encouraged to focus too much on how long a bulb lasts rather than its efficiency and disregard what the actual qualities of light of LED and CFL bulbs are. With regard to efficiency, or luminous efficacy (lm/W), halogen bulbs have an efficiency rating of between 10-30lm/W and LED light bulbs a rating of anywhere between 17 lm/W to 49 lm/W. This means that halogen bulbs can perform as well and sometimes better than LED bulbs. Though the efficiency of LED bulbs is promising, studies by consumer advocacy groups have found that there is little performance uniformity among LED bulbs: some are high performing whereas others do not even outperform incandescent bulbs. Though CFLs are more efficient than both halogen and LED bulbs, they use small amounts (1mg 5mg) of mercury, a neurotoxin, and thus present environmental concerns.

So where do halogen bulbs surpass LEDs and CFLs? BulbAmericas lighting experts observed it is in color faithfulness and their breadth of application. With regard to color faithfulness, or the color rendering index (CRI), LEDs and CFLs are inconsistent. A 2009 report by the Pacific Northwest Laboratory for the US Department of Energy found that LED replacement bulbs for directional MR16s and more diffuse light sources like A-shape bulbs had CRI scores at best 85 and at worst below 70. In other words, LED replacement bulbs may not be able to accurately display the colors in your home, restaurant, or store. Though CFLs fare slightly better than LEDs, halogens are by and large the best choice when color is important, such as in spaces like a kitchen or retail environment. BulbAmericas latest halogen bulbs from Philips, GE, Osram, Ushio and others are offered in nearly every shape from candelabra to T3 with CRI scores of 100 or very close to it, meaning that these bulbs portray color identically to daylight colors. Another advantage of halogens over LEDs and CFLs is that halogens produce a versatile light. In low voltage 12v MR16s, halogens can produce a highly focusable light perfect for spot or broader beams, whereas in PAR shapes halogen bulbs are exceptional for flood lighting and general illumination. LEDs have long struggled as general light sources and CFLs are inconsistent as directional light sources. Though LEDs and CFLs may be the longest lasting and most efficient, sometimes they are simply the wrong choice in certain applications and consumers lighting may suffer because of it. Halogens on the other hand are found in nearly all applications from stage & studio lighting to surgical and medical lighting. With respect to LED replacement bulbs, a 2010 report for the US Department of Energy on LED bulbs found that many of them do not correspond to the dimensions of the shapes they are replacing as specified by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) codes. What this means is that an LED MR16 intended for a specific track lighting fixture may not fit it even though the LED MR16 has the same ANSI letter-code as the bulb it is replacing. Having been around for a long time, halogen bulbs conform to all industry standards and their use will certainly reduce consumers headaches in finding replacement light bulbs that fit their existing fixtures.
