Seesmart Embarks on $2.3 Million Lights Retrofit of Pasadena Metropolis College

LED lighting manufacturer Seesmart, Inc. has secured a $ 2.3 million contract with Pasadena City College for a lighting retrofit to further its reputation as a leader in sustainability. The retrofit will replace more than 34,000 fluorescent tube lights in campus buildings with high-efficiency, long-lasting Seesmart LED tube lights.

Pasadena City Colleges anticipated LED retrofit benefits include significant energy savings of $ 720,000 and 3.7 million kilowatt-hours per year, and its carbon footprint will reduce by 5 million pounds per year. Additionally, the college expects an $ 850,000 rebate from Pasadena Water Power for this energy-saving project.

In the course of Pasadena City Colleges lighting retrofit, classrooms, offices, stairwells, parking structures, gymnasium, and mechanical rooms of 26 buildings will be converted from fluorescent to LED lighting. The contract for this massive project was issued using the California Multiple Award Schedules (CMAS).

T12 Phase-out

As of today, about 500 million T12 fluorescent tubes are still illuminating US buildings every day and are waiting to be replaced according to The National Lighting Bureau (NLB). The T12 phase-out government legislation is the strongest driver in the existing buildings lighting retrofit market. The upcoming Department of Energy (DOE) regulations will eliminate the most common T12 lamps starting in July 2012.

In the US, the three most popular technologies currently available in tubular linear fluorescent lighting are:

T12 = old (80 years) and inefficient

T8 = younger (30 years)and higher efficiency

T5 = youngest (10 years) and highest efficiency

The letter T in the lighting industry stands for tubular. The number directly following the letter T indicates the thickness or diameter of that particular tube in eighths of an inch.

T12 = twelve eighths of an inch in diameter or one and one-half inches thick

T8 = eight eighths of an inch in diameter or one inch thick

T5 = five eighths of an inch in diameter or five eighths of an inch thick
